Just got texted one four letter word by a source. Not good night folks. Be back with you after I take off from#NHL

I’m assuming “Good” wasn’t the four letter word in question…
Today wasn’t what I’d call a red letter day in labour negotiations. I say this because Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly abruptly got up and left the negotiating table about a half hour ago and Don Fehr is delivering an address to the adoring public.
And after hearing it, it didn’t sound too bad. According to Fehr, here’s a few things they’re stuck on.
- maximum length – The league wants a five year deal, the PA has proposed 8. Can we call it 6 and get on with it?
- variability (in order to prevent cap circumvention) The league proposed a 5% variance between the high and low years of a contract, the NHLPA has countered with the lowest (and usually last) year of a contract must be at least 25% of the high years.
- transition – how long will it take to go from the old system to the new system? Fehr states the NHL and the PA haven’t yet discussed this.
I’m only getting information from one side of the discussion, but if these are the only things that are holding the ink from hitting the paper, I’ve got to feel pretty good. So if Bill Daly got up and left an hour ago, I wouldn’t let it eat you too much.
Unless he’s setting the owners up for a fall…
