Much hubbub was made on the day Justin Schultz chose the Edmonton Oilers to be his lawfully wedded team at the end of June. The Oilers defence was a carwreck and needed a lot of help fast if they were serious about contending for a playoff spot in 2012-13.
Justin Schultz was a good step in the right direction, but they would’ve needed at least one more NHL-calibre player (in my mind) to make a significant enough upgrade to challenge for a playoff spot.
Fast forward to today.
We’re knees-deep in a lockout, and Justin Schultz is getting some playing time in the AHL before getting his ankles into the NHL. And if October is any indicator of Justin Schultz’s AHL potential, he should be well on his way to the AHL’s Player Of The Month award.
How good has Justin Schultz’s October been? Pretty good.
How about twelve points (6-6-12) in 7 GP good? How about first in scoring in the entire league good? Schultz has played seven games on an OKC Barons team that bears names like Eberle and Nugent-Hopkins. Not only does Schultz lead the team in scoring, as of today he leads the entire AHL.
Schultz has himself a pair of power play goals, a pair of shorthanded goals, and a game winner on October 13th against the Lake Erie Monsters. He’s got 27 shots in the month of October. He’s scored on 6 of them. That put his shooting percentage at around a nice fat 22%.
Not bad for your first month on the job.
