What a difference a week makes. The OKC Barons latest victim, the Lake Erie Monsters, who, within a span of 11 days, have completed the season series, with a 2-2 split. The AHL schedule shouldnt catch anyone off guard, teams play only inter-conference games with the majority of those being of the back to back variety to limit costs, after all, this is the reason Jordan Eberle, RNH & the like are making only 60k/yr to play minor-pro.
The game on Oct 23 vs the Monsters was a coming out party of sorts (at this level anyway) for Eberle & RNH, who with Teemu Hartakainen racked up a combined 8pts between them, not too shabby. Justin Schultz has continued his amazing pace by adding a couple of assists along the way to collecting AHL Player of the week honors. Schultz has 9pts on the season to lead the team in pts. Magnus Paarjarvi collected an apple along the way to a 5-3 Barons win.
What should excite Oilers fans the most is that every player who tallied points in this victory will be looked at to carry the load for the big club, whenever that happens. Schultz has shown a great ability to shoot the puck from everywhere while being teamed with highly touted Slovak prospect, Martin Marincon. Schultz’ skating looks to be NHL caliber & the way he rushes the puck reminds me a lot of a young Paul Coffey, I did say looks like. With Taylor Hall set to join the team shortly, the under 500 crowds should be in for quite a treat, even if its just for a little while & if nothing else this chapter should help elevate their overall play against strong competition so once the NHL is back in action, these kids will be alright.
