STEADY STEVE STAIOS RETIRES & GETS A NEW GIG IN T.O.

So, Steady announces his retirement today and in the same breath announces that he becomes part of the toronto Maple Leafs Player Development staff. As an Oilers fan, I have always loved Steady. I have several Signed photos of him in my oilers themed room in the basement of my house. including a banner that I had custom framed from the hallowed halls of Rexall Place. It’s a beauty!

I find it funny that when searching for photos of Staios for this post, I come across one where it looks like Steady wants to take Marleau’s head off with his stick after what seems to be a San Jose goal. Setting aside the minus that Steady got on this goal, I always remember him as a tough no bullshit kind of player. He was one of those guys that blocked shots fearlessly and was almost insane when it came to the lengths he was willing to go to sacrifice his body to stop a shot on net.

Being that Staios was a victim of the changing of the guard when the rebuild was inevitably started, it was really hard to see him in our barn in a Flames Jersey! Fortunately for us, his best years were spent here in Edmonton and therefore didn’t make that much of a difference to the outcome of games. Not to mention we were (are) a bottom feeding team, so it wouldn’t have mattered much anyway.

Personally I will miss seeing Steady play, he was a warrior on the ice. A great guy to talk to whenever I got the opportunity and a consummate pro.

Congratulations Steve, on a great career! You will, and have bee missed here in Edmonton. At least by this fan anyways.

Once an Oiler Always an Oiler
