Oilers, Gagner Avoid Arbitration, Sign One Year Deal

Sam Gagner and the Edmonton Oilers have avoided salary arbitration by the narrowest of margins, agreeing on a one-year deal for $3.2M earlier today.

It works out for both sides. Gagner gets a nice little raise from last year, and the Oilers nail down their second line centre for one more year. Plus, there’s that whole ‘let’s slag you in front of an arbitrator purely in the name of money’ scenario that Sam Gagner gets to avoid.

As far as one year deals go, it’s a nice little number. If Gagner and the Oilers went through arbitration, I had an unnerving feeling that a wacky high number could’ve been awarded. Hats off to both sides for coming to an eleventh-hour deal.
