Should Shawn Horcoff Give Up His Sweater Number For Nail Yakupov?

Yak-Madness has only just begun in Edmonton, and it’s sure to heat up with development camp beginning on Wednesday. It’s been determined that Nail Yakupov will sport the number 64 sweater for the duration of development camp, but what about when next season begins?

It’s no secret that Yakupov has worn 10 for most of his junior career. Shawn Horcoff has won it for his entire tenure in the Oilers organization. Should Horcoff give up his number for the young phenom?

Horcoff has been this team’s captain since Ethan Moreau has been gone.  He’s taken a lot of abuse from fans, critics, and some local media.  I’ve heard in several circles that it’s time for Horcoff to give up the ‘C’ for Taylor Hall.  I’m not sold on any of it.

I don’t think he should give his number to Nail Yakupov unless there’s a mutual agreement to.

I vote no. But you can vote yes.  Or something different altogether.

Should Shawn Horcoff voluntarily give up #10 for Nail Yakupov?

  • No! (65%, 271 Votes)
  • Yes! (35%, 146 Votes)

Total Voters: 416

Yakupov has already stated his favourite player growing up was Pavel Bure, and that makes a good argument for the 96 sweater.

    @OilOnWhyte thanks bro

  • bkruhlak

    @ryan_batty @OilOnWhyte #Oilers #NHL Horc should give up his sweater and his paycheck

    • ryan_batty

      @bkruhlak Why? @OilOnWhyte

      • bkruhlak

        @ryan_batty @OilOnWhyte The worse + – on the team, extremly over paid for what he does. Well he has just sucked since 2006.

        • ryan_batty

          @bkruhlak That’s an argument that he’s overpaid and I’ll agree. But that’s not his fault. That’s on management. @OilOnWhyte

        • ryan_batty

          @bkruhlak If anyone should pay for the Horcoff contract it should be the people who offered it not the player. @OilOnWhyte

        • bkruhlak

          @ryan_batty @OilOnWhyte That may be true, but a little more effort would be nice too.

        • ryan_batty

          @bkruhlak I have seen nothing that has ever made me question Horcoff’s effort in any way. @OilOnWhyte

        • bkruhlak

          @ryan_batty @OilOnWhyte Your the first person I’ve heard that feels that way. Are you related to Horcoff?

        • ryan_batty

          Question: Do you think that Horcoff’s effort level is a problem? @bkruhlak thinks so, I disagree.

        • marshaboyd

          @ryan_batty @bkruhlak Effort is never Horcoff’s problem. Maybe talent & finish for scoring but great 2 way & penalty killer,plays tough mins

        • declanl_12

          @ryan_batty horcoff openly admitted he didn’t buy into his role for 40 games. Nice captain. What a joke. That is 40 games of less effort.

        • JackieDee16

          @ryan_batty @bkruhlak Effort level? No. Skill level? Yes. Not a top 6 guy

        • OilOnWhyte

          @bkruhlak @ryan_batty Make it two.

        • bkruhlak

          @JackieDee16 @ryan_batty This is what I’m saying…Thanks

        • bkruhlak

          @OilOnWhyte @ryan_batty OK how much is he paying you guys?

        • ryan_batty

          @bkruhlak And yet you questioned his skill. So if that is what you were saying more clarity would help.

        • OilOnWhyte

          @bkruhlak @ryan_batty I wouldn’t expect Petrell to give up his number for Yakupov, let alone the captain.

        • bkruhlak

          @OilOnWhyte @ryan_batty I honestly wouldn’t expect anybody to give up there number for anybody. He had the skill in 2006.Where is it now?-25

        • ryan_batty

          @bkruhlak Injuries have slowed him down some but he’s basically the same player he always was. He was never worth his contract. @OilOnWhyte

  • jonrmcleod

    I think it’s disrespectful to ask the team captain to give up his number for a rookie–even if the rookie is the #1 overall pick.

  • declanl_12

    @ryan_batty he should give it up, and retire. I bet you would cry

    • ryan_batty

      @declanl_12 I’ll bet you a case of beer and 20 McNuggets that I wouldn’t.

      • declanl_12

        @ryan_batty mmmm can’t wait to collect that after ebs scores 30. Look at all those top corner snipes! http://t.co/SwmoFbHj

        • ryan_batty

          @declanl_12 For the record I would be thrilled to lose this bet. But I’m betting with my head and not my heart.

        • declanl_12

          @ryan_batty in that case I will happily split my winnings.

  • DawnCMW

    Certainly not!  And it kind of seems like a slap in the face to Horc to even ask.  Maybe I’m too sensitive but he takes a lot of undeserved criticism and deserves a lot more respect from fans.

  • Jayamania

    @ryan_batty Haha. What a great poll. And for the record, I voted Yes. 4th liners shouldn’t have a choice of what jersey # they should wear

    • ryan_batty

      @Jayamania Neither should a rookie.

      • Jayamania

        @ryan_batty I am joking of course. But agree with Dec, just retire or quit. This team will not take the next step until Horc is gone. FACT!

        • ryan_batty

          @Jayamania Why should he retire? He’s got a guaranteed contract. Would you retire in that situation? Doubtful.

        • Jayamania

          @ryan_batty If he was a good captain he would. lol. We both know he’d never retire, just wishing there was an easy way to get rid of him.

        • ryan_batty

          @Jayamania Given the cap space this team has and the role he plays I don’t see how his presence is that big of an issue.

  • oilsoup

    @OilersArmy The question isn’t whether he should give up his number? It’s whether he should give up his jersey! Horcoff needs to go! #oilers

    • Oil_Drop

      @oilsoup @OilersArmy I still say he’ll be solid in a third line role.

      • oilsoup

        @Oil_Drop @OilersArmy I don’t think he’s as defensively reliable as he use to be & he certainly kills the play whenever he touches the puck

        • Oil_Drop

          @oilsoup @OilersArmy That tends to be an issue when he’s played to death. If used correctly he serves a purpose. Far more useful than Smyth

        • oilsoup

          @Oil_Drop @OilersArmy Partly true, which is why he needs to go! He plays too much and isn’t good enough! As long as he’s paid the big bucks
