As soon as it was announced he would be stepping down from the Chicago Wolves bench, former Oilers coach and player Craig MacTavish is back with the Oilers as ‘Senior VP of Hockey Operations’.
At first, this sounds like some frumpy made up position that’s intended to bring a former Oiler back into the fold.
But I thought about it for a while. MacTavish stepped down from the Chicago Wolves bench (Vancouver’s AHL affiliate) and accepted the Oilers’ position in what seemed like about ten minutes. ‘Senior VP of Hockey Operations’ sounds like a fanciful position with no real duties, but then I see this.
MacTavish will be involved in all aspects of the team…coaching, management, Draft prep, etc.

Maybe it’s a bigger position than advertised. Maybe it isn’t “shoe buffer” after all. Side note, what’s with the red end of a shoe buffer? Other than say, clowns, what purpose does it serve? Coaching, management, draft prep…sounds almost general manager-like.
Is Craig MacTavish’s hire a wake-up call to Steve Tambellini? A one year demand to produce?
Your words. Let me hear them.
