After The First Round

It’s easy to get caught up in the first round mayhem that has become the annual rite of passage in Edmonton.  The Oilers ought to select Nail Yakupov, and unless things get really hairy, I expect them to.

The Oilers own the 32nd, the 63rd, and the 90th or the 91st pick (as part of the Penner to LA trade a year ago).

Who might the Oilers select at the 32nd pick overall?

Right now, the Oilers need to go via free agency to get some real, live NHL defencemen.  We’re a year away from Klefbom making his way to Edmonton, and they need NHL experience on defence NOW.  Last year when I wanted the Oilers to select Larsson, I half expected the team to grab a couple of NHL defencemen.  They grabbed  Andy Sutton and Cam Barker (NSFW).

Any defencemen they grab will in all likelihood need at least two years before having a shot to make it to the big dance.

I know, it’s tough, but let’s forget about the first pick for a minute.

Is the second round a time to find a defenceman that could’ve gone first round?  Or, should the team continue to look for a forward?

Over the next week or so, I’ll pick a few players that might end up at the table for the Oilers’ second round pick.

Until then, who do you like as Edmonton’s second round pick in this year’s draft?
