Raffi Torres Receives 25 Game Suspension

Phoenix’s Raffi Torres has received a 25 game suspension for this hit on Marian Hossa this past week.

You’ve probably seen this hit no less than a couple dozen times by now, and it doesn’t get any easier to watch after all those times.

The NHL’s justice system is wildly inconsistent, it’s true. Like most things, an example eventually would be made. Raffi Torres was that example, as he’ll be sitting for the remainder of the playoffs (at least) and likely a chunk of next season.

Did Shanahan overhear the whispers about previous suspensions? Does he care? Does Shea Weber getting only a $2500 fine have anything to do with a 25 game suspension for Raffi Torres? Is this a ‘make up’ call for past transgressions?

You guys are smart.  You tell me.

Raffi Torres laid an illegal check on Marian Hossa that caused him to be stretchered off the ice.  Was it worth 25 games?  Torres is a five-time supplemental discipline offender.  Does this weigh in your decision?

Raffi Torres is the example made.  Whether or not it will influence further decisions will likely soon be seen.
