I have been wondering what this day would mean to this team for awhile now. As a fan and season ticket holder I have my own feelings on what this day means to me, but I have no clue what it means to the Management of the Edmonton Oilers. I hope that it means that the team will not be in a lottery spot at this time next year. Having said that, I am really, really glad that we beat the odds and got the first over-all selection.

I have been trying to put myself into the role of General Manager for the last two days, wondering what I would do with the situation that I find myself in today. Without a contract in place, I guess I’m not doing anything. Assuming that will take care of itself and that I will be here when training camp starts in the fall, I have a lot of options before me to think about.

Personally I want the Oilers to keep the pick and draft Nail Yakupov. I like the idea of having four or five young stud forwards on this team growing together for years to come. I also am not confident in managements ability to trade the pick effectively. And by this, I am referring to the recent moves (last two years) that Steve Tambellini has made that have not worked out.

We can all list the moves Tambellini has made to varying degrees of success. I feel that there have been more moves that have not worked out for the club than have. If the Oilers pick the Russian winger they can’t screw it up. Just from the optics alone, they can confidently say, that they did their best.

If by some chance the Oilers were to trade the pick for (insert scenario here) something else, and that something else doesn’t pan out…Rexall place will burn like a Vancouver Cop Car this coming summer. Now, I hear you saying that the pick could not pan out to be a player too, but even if that happens no one can fault them for taking the best player available a the draft.

When the inevitable debate begins after draft day, I don’t want to say “they didn’t get enough” or “are you kidding me, they got that guy??” What I want to say is, my god…the Oilers are a better team today than yesterday. Just like I want to be able to say that on July 2nd after the free agent frenzy.

And that’s another good point…if the Oilers made some hard decisions on current roster players like Sam Gagner, Linus Omark, Ales Hemsky, Magnus Paajarvi, and Ryan Whitney as trades, not to mention we have a plethora of good forward prospects and some decent Defense prospects as well as cap space to address the needs on the blue line. Why not take the Russian and roll the dice on the rest?

in the meantime….
