BACK WHERE WE STARTED
Andy Sutton has signed a deal that will help him remain an Oiler for one more year.
If you remove Sutton’s two suspensions this year, this is a great signing. Even with the suspensions on his record, this is a tough one to get worked up about. Sutton will receive $1.5M in a deal that will see him in Oiler colours through the 2012-13 season.
Sutton has played in 33 games this season, and has nine points (3-6-9) to go along with a plus 2. Sutton is a guy who’s played well enough to warrant an extension. At the beginning of the season, I had him pencilled in a number seven guy for the defence. He hasn’t spent a minute in Oklahoma City, and he’s been a better option than some of the regulars on this year’s blue. At $1.5M, I like the deal. He’s taking a pay cut to remain in Edmonton, and he’ll be counted on to provide solid minutes once again in 2012-13.
If Sutton can avoid suspension in 2012-13 and pull in say, 70 games at his current rate of play, this is an excellent deal.
Heck, who am I kidding. I should be tap dancing. The Oilers kept a defenceman on the roster who’s going to play next year that has NHL experience. Thumbs up.
