And Now For Something Completely Different

Well maybe not that different… With nothing much to speak of that hasn’t already been said here or here or other places today, I thought I explain why I hate hockey pools. Now in reality I think hockey pools are a lot of fun, but there is one thing that I find really annoying. I should also point out that I’ve never been in a hockey pool until this year, but I’ve always wanted to. This year I finally took the plunge and joined a keeper league put on by the guys over at Putting on the Foil. It was a lot of work to start, but it’s going pretty well now.

So what do I hate about hockey pools, well let me tell you.

First off there’s the draft. It seemed like every round the player I wanted (and usually the second and third and fourth and…) got picked a few picks ahead of mine. I’m sure I did that to others as well (I was cursed at once or twice for doing just that), and really if it wasn’t for that I think it would be much less enjoyable overall (I really don’t get those hockey pools where most people have the same players).

But the worst part about hockey pools is having to cheer for the Flames. Now before you start screaming at me, I don’t and won’t ever cheer for the Flames (I proudly cheered for the Lightning in ’04). The thing is that in my hockey pool most of the starting goalies got picked before I had a chance to pick one, and I ended up with Kiprusoff. If I want to do well in my pool, he has to win games, so a part of me wants to cheer for them. So far I’ve been able to control these thoughts and push them aside, but it makes for a bit of a split personality when looking up the results. Maybe I should just trade him… But then there’s the fact that I have fellow Flames Backlund and Sarich. I think no matter what (unless you have no intention of doing well) you have to have players that you don’t like, and players from teams that you don’t like (or in my case players that you don’t like who play for teams you don’t like).

So that’s why I hate hockey pools, though I actually really enjoy them. Kind of like I want Kiprusoff to get some wins and not let too many goals in, while at the same time I want him to get shelled every time he plays…

Oh well, at least I have Taylor Hall!
