No Additional Penalty For Ryan Smyth

Good news comes from the Edmonton Journal’s Joanne Ireland today.

Ryan Smyth will not face any further discipline stemming from the aftermath of this hit on Chris Kunitz in Sunday’s season opener.

Smyth was the recipient of a five minute major-misconduct penalty on this collision with Pittsburgh’s Chris Kunitz.  The penalty was taken with just under five minutes remaining in regulation time during a 1-1 contest.  Not only was this a shoddy call, but it was a shoddy call during a tight game.

Instead of worrying whether he’ll be suspended or fined, Smyth can go back to worrying about other sundry topics.  Like…

  • what he’s having for dinner tonight
  • what he’s having for breakfast tomorrow morning
  • mullets
  • Air Supply

Good for Smyth on this one.  Good for the Oilers.  Good for common sense.
