Ladislav Smid Signs Two Year Deal

Ladislav Smid and the Edmonton Oilers have reached an agreement that will see Smid in Oiler colours throughout the 2012-13 season.

Smid has earned himself a significant raise, earning $2.25M a year for two seasons.  Smid’s new contract bests his previous one by just over 800K.  Not a value signing by any means, but not a terrible overpay by my eye.

Should the Oilers defence corps stand pat, you’ll see Smid a lot in the middle pair.  A depth player may be signed for defence over the coming free agency period, but it’s all but a lock that you’ll be seeing Smid in the middle come October.

July 1st isn’t just Canada Day, it’s also the beginning of the NHL’s annual free agent frenzy.  Will the Oilers sign someone to win a faceoff?  Maybe play D?  A backup or 1A goaltender?
