Update: Former Captain Jason Smith’s Assault Charges Withdrawn

A few months ago, you may recall former Oiler Captain Jason Smith was arrested after he allegedly engaged in an altercation with his wife and daughter.  Any time a story like this is broken, you really feel for the victims involved.  Should it be a true accusation, it would bring a dark cloud over the former Oiler Captain.

According to Darryl Slade of PostMedia News, Judge John Bascom states that both the Crown and the defence felt the assault charges should be withdrawn in favour of a peace bond.  From my limited legal knowledge, it normally would prevent any contact between Smith and his family for the length of the bond.  However, the article goes on to state that this provision was removed, as Smith and his wife are living together again in Ontario.  Jason Smith will have to undergo counselling, and cannot be in possession of alcohol for the length of the bond, which appears to be 12 months.

May the healing process continue for everyone involved.
