Over the last few days, it appeared that Sheldon Souray was putting the past behind him.
Today, he appeared skating with his teammates at Rexall Place. Yes sir, it surely appears that Sheldon Souray has put the worst behind him, and was ready to embark on a new season with a fresh attitude.
“Things that I said, that’s five months ago,” Souray told TSN. “We are in a completely different spot now and there is a lot of optimism.”
That doesn’t sound like a guy who was ripping into the organisation just a few months back now, does it?
But hold the phone:
Just a while ago, the Oilers Twitter account laid this one on the table
NHL_Oilers Statement from #Oilers GM Tambellini: Souray was informed last week that he will not be attending Training Camp. More details coming soon.
Oh boy, this is a mess. Sure looks like Sheldon Souray didn’t see this one coming, and if he did, he’s a hell of an actor.
I’m not surprised that Tambellini is taking the hard line here, at least initially. Souray had some rather unpleasant things to say about Edmonton and Oiler management after last season (and after a deal couldn’t get done) citing their lack of commitment amongst other things. But, I’m a little surprised that Souray wasn’t welcomed back into the fold on a temporary basis; it’s easier to make a trade during the season, especially if Souray is back healthy and performing. It seems that Tambellini is really making things especially hard for the organisation to get anything back at all in a trade.
If this current state of affairs between the club and Souray hold, I can’t see the team getting anything but a pick in return. Which, is better than nothing, but if Souray is back with the Oilers on the ice, injury free, looking like The Old Souray, it could’ve brought back a little bit more bacon.
Surely, more to come.
