Edmonton goaltender Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers has opted against arbitration, signing a one year deal with the club
After the jump, a little bit about the goaltending situation in Oilerville
WHO – Goaltender Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers
2009-10 NUMBERS 16-28-4, 3.26 GAA, .901 SV%
TERMS- $1.05M / 1 yr
SPECIFICS- It’s a one-way deal, which initially would lead me to believe that Edmonton would be keeping him on the big club throughout the entire season. However, there’s that whole Khabibulin thing that has yet to shake out.
A few scenarios-
- If Khabibulin can avoid any downfall (incarceration or otherwise) from his DUI charge – and comes to camp in proper condition, there’s a good chance that Deslauriers could be sent to start in OKC which would require him passing through the waiver wicket.
- That same scenario could also be Devan Dubnyk getting pushed down to OKC, which would then require Dubnyk passing through waivers. I’d bet you a nickel that if Khabibulin comes to camp healthy and ready, JDD would be the first choice to go down. And if that’s the case, would he run the risk of getting snatched by someone looking for a relatively inexpensive #2 netminder?
- If Khabibulin isn’t ready to start the season, or for whatever reason he is “unable to attend”, JDD and Dubnyk would likely share goaltending duties, with Coach Renney riding the hot hand.
I call this a decent signing. Deslauriers had fair numbers with a team that was awful last year. There’s still a fair shot that a goalie is signed to play in OKC if the Khabibulin fiasco doesn’t play itself off in a month. I’m somewhat lukewarm about entering the season with the JDD / Dubnyk tandem, but you can at least bet that they’ll be in constant competition throughout the season.
